How to Report a Fake Account Impersonating You

How to Report a Fake Account Impersonating You

Short answer: Screenshot the fake profile and save its URL, then use the platform's impersonation report, not its copyright form. Instagram, TikTok, and X each have one, and each will ask you to verify your identity. Warn your audience from your real account while the report is reviewed.

Fake accounts built from your photos are more than annoying. They message your followers, sell fake content, or run scams in your name, and the people who fall for them blame you. Here is how to get them removed, platform by platform.

Before you report: save the evidence

Impersonators often rename or delete an account once they notice it's been reported. Save:

  • The profile URL, not just the username, since usernames change
  • Screenshots of the profile, its posts, and any messages it sent your followers
  • Links to your real account and the original posts of any photos it reused

Impersonation vs. copyright: pick the right form

This is where most reports go wrong. A copyright report removes specific posts that use content you own. An impersonation report removes the account itself. If you only file copyright, the platform may take down a few photos and leave the fake account running.

File both when they apply: impersonation for the account, copyright for photos or videos you own. A photo someone else took of you usually belongs to that photographer, so it may not qualify for a copyright report, but the impersonation report still does.

Instagram, TikTok, and X

  • Instagram: report the profile in the app, or search "impersonation" in the Instagram Help Center for the form. Meta may ask for a photo ID. See our Instagram guide.
  • TikTok: TikTok has a dedicated impersonation report for accounts using your name or likeness. See our TikTok guide.
  • X: X's Help Center has an impersonation form under its authenticity policies, for accounts pretending to be you.

Platforms ask the person being impersonated to verify their own identity, so this is one report you generally file yourself rather than through an agent. Our free impersonation report generator writes the report text for you.

Protect your audience while you wait

  • Post from your real account that you only use the handles you list
  • Pin a short note naming your real accounts and saying you never ask for payment in DMs
  • Ask followers to report the fake too; more reports can help it get reviewed

If the account is scamming people or threatening you, report it to law enforcement as well.

When the fakes keep coming back

Removing one account rarely ends it. The same person often returns with a new handle and the same photos. Searching your name every week works, but only until you stop.

Proprias watches for your names and handles every day, and with opt-in face matching flags fake profiles on Instagram and TikTok and public pages using your face. Each match comes with its evidence and the right report form for the platform. See likeness and impersonation protection.

FAQs

Can someone else report an account impersonating me?

Followers can report it as fake, which helps, but the impersonation report that leads to removal usually has to come from you, because the platform needs to verify you're the real person.

Is impersonating someone online illegal?

It breaks every major platform's rules. Whether it's also a crime depends on where you live and what the account does; impersonation used for fraud or harassment is illegal in many places.

How long does an impersonation report take?

Often a few days, sometimes longer when ID verification is involved. Keep your evidence in case the account is renamed while the report is open.
