How to report leaked content on Reddit

DMCA plus the involuntary pornography policy — and what to do when a subreddit returns.

Reddit threads index well, which means a leak thread often outranks your own pages for your stage name. That visibility is the damage, and it is also what makes Reddit leaks findable — the same indexing that hurts you makes them easy to catch with a search.

Reddit has a formal DMCA process and a separate policy against involuntary pornography, which covers intimate imagery posted without consent regardless of who owns the copyright.

Legal basis: DMCA §512 for copyright, plus Reddit's policy prohibiting involuntary pornography.

Where to file

Reddit copyright infringement help

Reddit's documentation of its DMCA process, including the report form and what a valid notice must contain.

In-app report

On the post: Report → "It's involuntary pornography" (or the closest category). This route does not require a copyright claim and goes to the safety team rather than the legal queue.

What you need

  • Direct permalinks to each post or comment — including comment permalinks, since links are often dropped in replies
  • Identification of your original work and where it was published
  • Contact details and the standard sworn DMCA statements
  • Screenshots of the thread before it is deleted or the subreddit is banned

Typical response time

DMCA notices are typically actioned within days. Involuntary pornography reports are usually prioritized.

What usually goes wrong

  • Messaging subreddit moderators is not a substitute for filing — mods can remove a post, but only Reddit can act on the account and preserve a record.
  • Banned leak subreddits reconstitute under new names within days. Monitoring by search catches the new one faster than checking the old URL.
  • The comments matter as much as the post: mirrors and re-uploads usually appear there after the original link dies.
  • A removed Reddit thread can stay in Google's cache for a while — file a Google removal too.

Frequently asked questions

Should I comment in the thread to say the content is stolen?

Generally no. It draws attention to the thread, invites harassment, and does not remove anything. Document it and file instead.

What if the subreddit gets banned and recreated?

Expect it. Focus on the indexed URLs — file Reddit reports for each new instance and request Google deindexing so the threads stop surfacing in search regardless of which subreddit is currently hosting them.

Can I report a comment, not just a post?

Yes. Comments have their own permalinks and can be reported individually. This matters because re-upload links commonly appear in comments after the original post link is dead.

Filing is the last step
